Tanking Skills and Point allocation

The main difference between a tank, a hybrid and a dps warrior is the allocation of skill points.

Stat points can be compensated, to a certain degree, with nifty jewelry.

Charms, bracers and rings also offer skill points, but not to the point of allowing a dps to tank properly.

*Note I omitted all single skill rings, as I found them rather useless as opposed to the alternatives mentioned below. Most of the jewelry are based on Godly/Imperial/Royal/Mighty system, where Godly gives +10 skills.
Taunt (42) – This is the fundamental tank ability to make the mob attack you. This ability must be at level 50, after bonuses from gear. Has a small range, affects one target. Has a short cast time, and relatively short cool down. It is treated as a physical special attack, and can be evaded by the mob/boss. (for details on aggro, read this.)

Tanks with poor gear and stats can be kept alive by OP druids. I tanked Bloodthorn and Gelebron with barely 20k health and 6k def fully buffed and combo lixed, using 190 neck and low proto braces.

Unfortunately, Druids cannot help taunt the mob/boss for the tank.

EDL shield, as well as some jewelry, enhance the amount of threat generated by taunt. *Note to WOW tanks, CHa’s Taunt does NOT force the mob to attack you, unlike the Taunt ability in WOW, so you will have to keep generating threat until you reach the top aggro.

Gear that gives +taunt skill :

Dragonlord legs grant +5

Exalted Dragonlord leggings grant +8

Vanguards of the Summit bracers (Monolith) grant up to +10

Aetheric Band of Chivalry (Gelebron) grant up to +10, along with protective stance

Armlet of Taunt bracer grant up to +10 and +2000 to threat

Abyssal Ring of Brawling (Mordris) up to +10, along with pummel

Dragon Ring of Taunt up to +10

Beastbone boots add +threat, though they do not give skills

Band of Chivalry bracer (Gelebron) up to +10, along with protective stance

Bloodleaf Band of Shielding grants + threat

Shield Wall (45) – Shield wall absorbs ALL forms of damage, including DoTs (poison, curses etc). Shield wall also block life leech from the boss as well (Hrungnir/Necro). Instant cast, affects self only. 18 seconds cool down when not affected by gear.

Amount absorbed is approximately (65.35*sqrt(Vitality) + 20.662*sqrt(Melee Combat) + 726.98) taken from Swan’s post here.

This ability should be maxed at 50, after bonuses from gear. Necro Braces and Bloodthorn Rings reduce cast time. Some bosses like Proteus uses Optic Ray every 11-15seconds. A 40% recast time reduction is required to keep shield wall up for ALL Optic Rays. Even with 30% you will take a couple of Optic Rays that comes faster than the Shield Wall cool down.

Gear that gives +Shield Wall skill :

Abyssal Ring of Shields (Mordris) grant up to +10, along with Shield Bash

Necro Band of Shield Wall (Necro) does not grant skill, but lowers recast time up to 30%

Orphic Ring of Shield Wall (Proteus) grant up to +10

Aetheric Band of Strategist (Gelebron) Bracers grant up to +10, along with Def Formation

Silverweb Charm of Chitin Misc grant up to +10, along with Protective Stance

Bloodleaf Band grants up to -40% lower recast time.

Shield Bash (42) – From Hungnir onwards, Shield Bash is a MUST in order to prevent bosses from healing, casting corrupted carapaces, or fling some really disgusting goo at you. See this post for details. This ability is quick cast, and has limited range on one target. It is treated as a physical special attack, and thus can be evaded by the mob/boss’s physical evasions.

Even if you are not using it to stop the mobs evil plans to send you to the horrible 2 option screen, you can also use shield bash as a 5 second stun for a quick respite.

The 5 seconds can be great for rummaging your bags for the carrot for your pesky critter, finding the right elixir/potion to drink mid combat, buy the healer time to catch a quick breather, or simply just to make the guy less enthusiastic about punching your face in.

*note, this skill should only be at 42, after gear, as all mobs are only 220 level.

**Higher than level 42 bash will cause any overlapping bashes by other warriors (who have level 42 bash) to be resisted.

Gear that gives +Shield Bash skill :

Abyssal Rings of Guarding (Mordris) grants up to +10, along with Def Formation

Abyssal Rings of Shield (Mordris) grants up to +10, along with Shield Wall

Dragon Rings of Shield Bash grants up to +10

*skill bought at castle.

Defensive Formation (42) – This ability boosts a fixed amount of defence according to this formula (16.664*sqrt(Vitality) + 5.1654*sqrt(Melee Combat) + 101.07) taken from Swan’s post here.

Defence increases the tank’s chance to evade bosses’ auto attacks entirely. Almost all bosses do auto attacks all the time. (except EDL 190)

The value of this ability scales as the bosses’ auto attack damage goes higher. It is also cast a few times but lasts throughout the encounter. IMO this skill has higher priority than Protective Stance. This spell also affects the entire group within range when cast.

Defence does nothing for special attacks. It will not help anyone avoid physical special attacks like Rotor blades etc.

Gear that gives +Defensive Formation skill :

Dragonlord legs grant +5

Exalted Dragonlord leggings grant +8

Aetheric Band of Strategist (Gelebron) Bracers grant up to +10, along with Shield Wall

Abyssal Rings of Guarding (Mordris) grants up to +10, along with Shield Bash

Abyssal Rings of Defenders (Mordris) grants up to +10, along with Protective Stance

Sunfire Charm of Mending Formation does not grant any skill, but heals you for a small amount every time you use Def Formation. (250 at Godly)

*skill tome dropped by Sewers Mobs.
Protective Stance (42) – Protective Stance increases Physical Resistance (Armor). Useful for Proteus and Mordris, but does nothing for bosses with Elemental or Chaos special attacks. High resistance is always more consistent than High Evasion.

Physical Resistance means the tank take less damage for both autos and special attacks (physical). Physical Evasion means the tank takes zero damage from physical special attacks only.

Armor gained is approximately (13.86*sqrt(Vitality) + 3.9263*sqrt(Melee Combat) + 142.46) taken from Swan’s post here.

Gear that gives +Protective Stance skill :

Dragonlord legs grant +5

Exalted Dragonlord leggings grant +8

Abyssal Rings of Defenders (Mordris) grants up to +10, along with Def Formation

Abyssal Rings of Knighthood (Mordris) grants up to +10, along with Giant Swing

Aetheric Band of Chivalry (Gelebron) grant up to +10, along with Taunt

Silverweb Charm of Chitin Misc grant up to +10, along with Shield Wall

Dragon Ring of Protective Stance grant up to +10

Orphic Ring of Protective Stance (Proteus) grant up to +10

*skill bought at castle.
Warcry – A secondary aggro ability. This is instant cast, affects all mobs near the tank. has limited range. Relatively short cool down. Has reduced effect compared to Taunt, and can be evaded similarly.

Warcry works even at level 1, pop warcry and then EDL/DL shield ability, and you will already have aoe threat building.

Useful only for picking adds quickly, but not optimal use of GCD and energy for threat building. It is good for tanking Proteus adds, or when dps severely over gear tank.

Gear that gives +Warcry skill :

Beastbone Legs give + aggro amount, no skill

Abyssal Ring of Warfare (Mordris) grant up to +10, along with Sweeping Blow

Dragon Ring of Warcry grant up to +10

Trollbone Helm of Warcry (Hrungnir) grant up to +10

*skill tome dropped by Otherworld Fairyland Bosses
Enduring Guard – Increases Physical Evasion, useful only for bosses that uses physical special attacks (Shambling strike, Rotor blades etc) Does nothing for auto attacks.

Not recommended to put any points in. Cast only at non caster bosses.

Sunfire Charm of Enduring Health does not grant any skill, but heals you for a small amount every time you use Enduring Guard. (500 at Godly)

*skill learnt from tavern quest

How much points should you allocate then? Dragonlord and Exalted Dragonlord is pretty much a given, so just use deduct the amount of skill points you will get from gear and jewelry from 50, and put the leftovers into the ability of your choice. (which is probably Warcry or Shatter)
